Emissivity Makes a Temperature Difference (Video)
Emissivity makes a temperature accuracy difference for infrared thermometers. Frank Liebman, an engineer with Fluke Calibration, demonstrates the impact that surface emissivity has on temperature measurement and temperature calibration using a modified Fluke blackbody calibrator and Fluke Thermal Imager.
Product Information
Emissivity Compensation for Fluke Calibration 4180 Series Precision Infrared Calibrators
To perform accurate infrared thermometer calibration, it's important to properly adjust the emissivity settings for both the Fluke Calibration 4180 Series Precision Infrared Calibrators and the infrared thermometer. The emissivity setting of the 4180 or 4181 should be set to the same setting as the inrared thermometer's emissivity setting during a calibration.

Papers/Articles
Infrared Temperature Calibration 101 (Paper)
This application note demystifies the process of infrared (or “IR”) thermometry and explains why regular calibration is important for maximizing the value of these useful devices.
Infrared Thermometer Calibration — A Complete Guide (Paper)
With proper setup and planning, infrared thermometer calibrations can be accurate. The steps outlined below should be followed to perform accurate infrared thermometer calibrations. Much of the information presented here is contained in ASTM E2847, “Standard Practice for Calibration and Accuracy Verification of Wideband Infrared Thermometers.”
Determining Size of Source for Handheld Infrared Thermometers - Theory and Practice (Paper)
This paper discusses size of source as it applies to IR thermometers. It covers experimentation done on handheld IR thermometers to determine size of source using accepted practices. It also compares this data to manufacturer's specifications given with the tested instruments. It demonstrates how to apply this knowledge to account for the uncertainty caused by not having a source of proper size and shows how to apply this data to an uncertainty budget.
Uncertainty Budgets for IR Temperature Measurement - An Overview (Paper)
This paper discusses the elements needed for an IR thermometry uncertainty budget, especially as it relates to thermal imagers. It introduces a measurement equation and discusses how to apply that equation to measurements made with imagers. It discusses how to structure an uncertainty budget so it can be understood by other thermographers and assessors.
Testing Temperature Uniformity on a Flat-Plate Infrared Calibrator (Paper)
This paper discusses how uniformity is measured by a flat-plate manufacturer. It discusses what this means for both the calibration of an IR imager and the user of an IR thermometer. It proposes a test method that may become a standard for testing flat-plates.
Emissivity - The Crux of Accurate Radiometric Measurement (Paper)
Understanding the sources of error for flat plate emissivity, and how this knowledge leads to more accurate calibration of IR thermometers.
