Which model would be best for a fire alarm technician?
Provided you don’t need to measure milliamperes (mA) or below, either the 115 or 117 should do you just fine. Out of these two in the 110-series, the 117 is definitely the better investment and possibly a necessity if you have a need for any of the additional features exclusive to it such as Low Z. If you need to check small currents, e.g. milliamperes, this series doesn’t have it. The starting point would be the 17B+, however it’s more geared towards electronics and “missing” some very useful features such as TRMS! So, I couldn’t recommend the 17B+ for you. Now, if you need a meter that does “everything” well, then it’ll cost roughly double the price, but the 87V will surely last you an entire career, maybe even an entire lifetime!
Just look carefully at the specs and see which model includes everything you need. I would stick with the 115, 117, or 87V as they all will be quality investments that are actually dependable. I know because my Flukes lasted me an entire career!

Rated 5 out of 5 by cuttyusa66 from Good for electrical hobbyist and DIY home projects Bought a Fluke 115 multimeter for hobby electronics projects, and DIY stuff around the house. So far, so good! I especially appreciate the diode measurement feature, and the ability to measure capacitance. The continuity beeper is also super helpful, and very quick to respond.

Rated 1 out of 5 by worf from None Bought so i didn’t have to pull out my 787 when i need to troubleshoot wires, cables, grounds, or power. When using for 10 minutes it gets lost. If using ohms or power it does not read correctly. If you turn it off for 5-10 seconds its starts working BUT it gets lost again & faster this time. VERY unreliable
